Prayers for the Third Sunday in Lent

As we return to the waters of Baptism during this season of Lent, let us pray for the world God loves, the Church God calls, and all who need our prayers, saying “Hear us, O God,” and responding, “Your mercy is great.”

[Short pause]

Gracious, loving God, you do not give us what we deserve.  Instead, you give us what you want to give us – your love, your presence, your compassion.  We give you the thanks we are able to give.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Gracious, loving God, you give us gifts beyond measure – the ability to work, the ability to think, the ability to welcome each other, the ability to serve.  Help us respond to you by using these gifts to their full measure.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Gracious, loving God, you give us your Spirit, inspiring concern for our needy neighbours.  As we go though our week, use us to provide food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, and welcome for the stranger.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Gracious, loving God, you give your church the promise of Good News, and a commission to proclaim it continually.  Remind us that your love permeates all of life, and that we are invited to share that love in all we do together.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Gracious, loving God, you give us a ministry of healing.  Use us to touch the sick, the lonely, the shut in and the shut out with your healing love.  We especially pray for those who lie heavy on our hearts.  [Long Pause]  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Gracious, loving God, you do not give us what we deserve.  Free us from demanding that others meet our expectations.  Liberate us from making judgments about who deserves our consideration.  Fire our spirits, to release the love you give us.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

We offer all these prayers, as well as the deep yearnings of our hearts, to you, gracious and merciful God, in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
