Prayers of the People for Pentecost 15 / Ordinary 22

Trusting the promise that God will hear our prayers, we offer our concern for the world God loves, the Church God calls, and all people according to their needs, saying, “Hear us, O God,” and responding, “Your mercy is great.”

[Brief pause]

Welcoming God, you reach out to all with gracious hospitality.  Free us from our fear of others, so we, too, may reach out with gracious hospitality.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Challenging God, you call our assumptions into question; you don’t play by our rules.  Free us from our desire for control, so we may enter into ministry on your terms.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Generous God, you give, you provide, you supply far beyond what we realize.  Free us from our fear of lack, so we may give without needing to be recognized or repaid.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Truth-telling God, you confront us with our complicity with injustice and inequality.  Enable us to stand again the status quo of discrimination and oppression, that we may speak truth in our time, and point to a better way.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Healing God, you promise that illness, poverty, broken relationships and death do not ultimately define who we are.  Help us as we reach out to those who suffer in any way; use us to proclaim your healing word, especially to those we name before you.
[Long pause]
Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

Present God, you are here.  May our lives show this reality, today and every day.  Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.

We offer these spoken prayers, as well as those offered in the silence of our hearts, to you, O God, in the name of Jesus, the Christ.
Amen.
