Prayers of the People for Christmas, 2014

As we celebrate the coming of the Christ, we offer our prayers of thanksgiving and concern, trusting the promise that we will be heard.

[Short pause]

God of the small, we give you thanks for coming in the little areas of life, where people feel helpless and powerless. Remind us all of your presence. God who comes,
Hear our prayer.

God of the hidden, your Spirit continues to blow in backwaters and through forgotten corners of this world. Open our eyes to see and our ears to hear. God who comes,
Hear our prayer.

God of the forgotten, we offer our prayers for those whose lives do not make the headlines, through whom you are announcing Good News in our day. We remember native peoples working for mining justice, those who are trying to help child soldiers recover their childhood, and people who are assisting refugees to maintain their identity. God who comes,
Hear our prayer.

God of justice, through Jesus’ birth you announce your care and compassion in a world obsessed with power and control. Strengthen our faith, so that we may be among those who announce Good News to those oppressed by today’s Caesars. God who comes,
Hear our prayer.

God of light, the darkness which surrounds us can seem overwhelming. Use us to touch those who mourn, those who are sick, those who have lost hope, and all those in need whom we name before you now [ESPECIALLY NAMES].
[Long pause]
God who comes,
Hear our prayer.

God of Christmas, you do come – in the small, in the hidden, in the forgotten, in the darkness. Fill us with the righteousness of Joseph, the willingness of Mary, the song of the angels and the joy of the shepherds. God who comes,
Hear our prayer.

We offer all these prayers, as well as the silent desires of our hearts, to you loving God, in the name of the one who came, who comes, and who will come, Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord.
Amen.
