Prayers of the People for Advent 1, 2016

We are invited to bring our world and our lives to God in prayer, trusting that we will not only be heard, but strengthened for ministry.  Trusting this promise, let us pray.

[Short pause]

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, you call the world into your presence.  May we be open to respond.  Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, your love extends to all people.  May we not only break down the walls of hatred and suspicion, may we refuse to build them.  Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, you have created us to live in diversity, to live with difference.  May we be open to the gifts that others bring.  Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, you call your church to live in the light of your promise now.  May we respond today.  Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, you have called us to serve our neighbours.  We give thanks for those who have responded to this call by offering to serve in elected office.  May they remember the source of their call, and may we support them as they struggle to be faithful to that call.  Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, you are most profoundly present in the middle of pain and weakness.  May we be your presence with those who are sick, shut-in, depressed or excluded, especially [NAMES, AND] those we name before you.
[Long pause]
Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

God who has come, God who comes, God who will come, you call the world into your presence.  May we be open to respond.  Liberating God,
Hear our prayer.

We offer all these prayers, as well as the unspoken longings of our hearts, to you, liberating God, in the name of Jesus, our liberating Saviour.
Amen.
