Prayers of the People for the Transfiguration of Our Lord 2014

Trusting the promise of God who enlightens all of life, we offer our prayers saying, “Light of the world,” and responding, “Shine on us and through us.”

[Short pause]

God of light, you shine in all of life.  Open our eyes to see.  Light of the world,
Shine on us and through us.

God of light, you shine in the darkest places.  Lead us to share your love and light in all the valleys we encounter.  Help us to embrace the people of Syria, Ukraine, the Central African Republic, and the poor of our own community.  Light of the world,
Shine on us and through us.

God of light, you shine in our confusion.  As you inspire our vision, keep us from self-condemnation; free us to respond with eagerness to the ministry opportunities which surround us.  Light of the world,
Shine on us and through us.

God of light, you shine in this congregation.  Open our lives to reflect your brilliant love, and show us the next step in our journey as your people.  Light of the world,
Shine on us and through us.

God of light, you shine in our need.  Use us to touch those who need healing, support, food, work, meaning and hope, especially those we name before you.
[Long pause]
Light of the world,
Shine on us and through us.

God of light, you shine in all of life.  Open our eyes to see.  Light of the world,
Shine on us and through us.

We pray in the name of Jesus, our light, our life, and our hope.
Amen.

Prayers for Transfiguration Sunday

Celebrating the coming of the One who brings the reign of God to all people, let us pray for the world God loves, the Church God calls, and all people according to their needs, saying, Lord, in your mercy, and responding, Hear our prayer.

[Brief pause]

God of Moses and Elijah, of Peter, James and John, you have chosen people throughout history to be your people, to point to you, to serve their neighbour.  Help us respond in this time and place, so we may truly be your people, point to you, and serve our neighbours.  Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

God of the church, we give thanks for walking with your people in Kitchener, Montreal and Baghdad.  May your church throughout the world reflect the light of your love into the dark places of life.  Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

God of creation, all we see and have belong to you.  May our lives reflect the light of your care for all you have made.  May we think beyond our own wants and desires, become more aware of the needs of others, and work for a future aglow with justice.  Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

God of mountain tops, we give thanks for times of inspiration and intimacy, of insight and awareness.  Free us from wanting to cling to your gifts; strengthen our faith to share it all.  Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

God of low places, we thank you for your promise that nothing will separate us from your love.  Give us courage to enter the valleys of life – ghettos and slums, housing projects and hospital rooms, food banks and women’s shelters.  Open our hearts to share your love with all who need it, especially those we name before you.
[Long pause]
Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

God of ministry, you send us down the mountain.  Lead the way, give us faith to follow, and give us eagerness to serve.  Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

God who shines in the darkness, receive these prayers and the prayers of our hearts, in the name of the one who is your light, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
